With the proliferation of musician bloggers I see a lot of technical analysis, which can be useful for imitating the music, but there's always this disconnect between the analysis and the aesthetic judgment, which generally amounts to hyperbolic cheerleading, supported by nothing but the the writer's emotional response. If the writer has literary aspirations or pretensions, you get a bunch of imagery and whatnot, but that doesn't really clarify things either.

On the other hand, it's a pretty straightforward to explain why a piece of music doesn't work for you, although I find that the main thing that accomplishes is that you start getting a lot of funny looks from people, as I noticed happening at tonight's LACMA concert, although that was probably just because I was kind of gassy.freetofuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12909405506504586163noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8326339.post-32204560648727223322014-06-30T15:00:56.529-07:002014-06-30T15:00:56.529-07:00Thank you for reading, Mr. Thomas--sorry for the d...Thank you for reading, Mr. Thomas--sorry for the delayed response, and yes, by all means, feel free to link.Andrew Durkinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11471871547839907538noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8326339.post-34544633629188554792014-05-30T08:08:05.014-07:002014-05-30T08:08:05.014-07:00Some of the things I struggle with when programing...Some of the things I struggle with when programing concerts. I was...Good post. Glad you're blogging again.

I was planning to use Gioia's article as discussion fodder in class tonight. So hard to get students to see the value in using analytical language to describe/write about music when all they see in the media is the pop drivel he complains about. Still, I agree that the answer isn't to go all in for theory, but to effectively use objective observations to back up subjective interpretation (and vice versa).
